Sol LeWitt's arcs, struck at a fixed spacing from each of the four corners and the middle of each of the four sides, and stopping where the sheet does. A centre sits on the edge, so every arc it throws begins and ends on the edge too — which means one family need not be eight-and-twenty pen-downs but one: the pen leaves each arc, walks the border to where the next begins and carries on, exactly as a hatched cell does. Eight strokes and the border, for some two hundred arcs. The border is drawn because those walks are on it; on a wall the wall is the border and there is nothing to draw. Corners take one pen and sides another, which is ours — the two families are the whole content of the piece and nothing else tells them apart.
