Khatam, the eight-point star of Persian and Islamic marquetry: a star on every tile and a small cross on every crossing between four of them. Drawn as strapwork rather than as two squares laid at 45° — the star is one closed sixteen-gon instead of two overlapping outlines, and the straps are run right through the crosses, so each is a single straight line from one star's point to the next star's rather than four segments meeting at a corner. The densest of these in pen-ups, because a star is a star and there is no honest way to join it to the next one.
